Hello and Welcome!
If you follow along here you’ll know how much we love our grannies! Especially the infinity variety. We thought we’d shake it up a bit and do something different with this blanket.
Today we’re featuring the Sunburst Granny Square Blanket worked in Hobby Lobby I Love this Yarn! We decided to go with a Scandinavian feel that we’re in mad love with! For those of you folks that don’t celebrate the holidays, but like a good winter themed blanket, this one is for you!
What is the Sunburst Granny Stitch?
Not your traditional granny square, but oh so fun! The first three rounds of a Sunburst Granny are worked in the round with puff stitches and cluster stitches.
**NOTE** We always start our granny’s with a magic ring, but you can start yours however works for you.
**NOTE** Don’t be intimidated by the instructions folks! At the end of the day, it’s easier to do than it is to read!

The Tutorial
If you’re not familiar with the Sunburst Granny Stitch or you need a refresher we recommend THIS video.
In today’s post I will share everything you need to make the lovey, but if you’re interested in making this bigger you can get the downloadable pdf HERE.
Row Counts
The graphic above is a digital mock up of the finished blanket. Make the first 3 rounds in each color below by the total number listed for a total of 30 squares. The final round for each square is finished in WHITE.
- SUNGOLD– 6
- RED – 6
- BROWN – 6
- STONE WASH – 6
- LIGHT GREY – 6
Want an easy way to keep track of each row? We sure do, so we include row trackers in our PDF’s! You can download that HERE. I don’t know about you, but if I don’t have something to physically check off, I spend more time counting and recounting instead of crocheting!
TIPS
We have a few tips to help ya out! You can always do what works the best for you, but these are what we find to be tried and true for us!
- Try to weave in those ends as you go. There will be A LOT!
- Depending on your joining method, the edges may buckle in. This is normal.
- Granny sqaure blankets are always the best with a border! Don’t skip it on this one!

BORDER
For this blanket, I did one round of double crochet granny clusters in white and one round double crochet granny clusters in grey. If I were to do this again, I would definitely do 2 rounds in the light grey.
If you have any border ideas to share, leave us a comment below!

Sometimes it’s easier to shop your stash so we worked out some alternative brands for ya. We’ve matched each one in person so we know first hand they’ll play nice and look lovely! To see the exact amounts of each you will need to purchase and download the pdf. You can do that HERE.
